Hull Repairs for Your Canoe or Kayak
No matter how careful you are with your canoe or kayak, eventually damage can happen. Rocky rivers, hard shoreline landings, transport issues, tree falls at camp, or years of regular paddling can all take a toll on a boat’s hull. Sometimes the damage is obvious. Other times it can hide beneath the surface and slowly get worse over time.
At Johnny’s Boat Shop, hull repairs are one of the most common services we provide, especially here in Muskoka where boats see plenty of hard use throughout the paddling season.
One of the first signs of hull damage on a composite canoe or kayak is stress cracking in the gelcoat. On clear laminate canoes, where you can see the Kevlar or carbon fibre beneath the surface, damage can often appear as spider cracks, cloudy areas, or soft spots in the hull. If you gently press on the damaged area and it flexes more than the surrounding hull, there’s a good chance the laminate underneath has been compromised and a structural hull repair is needed.
On canoes with coloured gelcoat, the warning signs are similar. Cracks, chips, soft spots, or areas that feel weakened usually indicate damage below the surface. Catching these issues early is important because small cracks can eventually allow water intrusion and lead to larger, more expensive repairs later on.
We repair all types of laminate and composite hull damage, including fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fibre, and hybrid construction canoes and kayaks. Depending on the repair, we may use epoxy, vinyl ester, or polyester resin along with professional techniques like vacuum bagging, resin infusion, and hand lamination to restore the strength and integrity of your boat.
We also offer polyethylene welding for plastic canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Cracks, holes, and splits in plastic hulls can often be repaired successfully and returned to service rather than replaced.
Every repair starts with a free assessment. We’ll inspect the damage, explain what’s happening, discuss repair options, and provide a clear quote before any work begins. No guesswork, no surprises.
One thing we don’t offer is aluminum welding for leaking aluminum canoes. However, we’re always happy to help with aluminum trim repairs like seat replacements, missing rivets, yokes, or thwart repairs.
With more than 20 years of canoe and kayak repair experience, Johnny’s Boat Shop takes pride in professional workmanship, honest advice, and repairs that are built to last. If your boat has damage and you’re not sure what it needs, bring it by the shop and we’ll take a look.
