Canoe Thwart & Yoke Replacement
Keep Your Canoe Comfortable and Trail Ready
If you’ve ever carried a canoe down a long Algonquin Park portage, you already know how important a good yoke can be. A properly fitted yoke helps balance the canoe comfortably on your shoulders and makes those long carries far more manageable.
At Johnny’s Boat Shop, we regularly replace worn, cracked, and rotting canoe thwarts and yokes for paddlers, camps, outfitters, and backcountry travellers across Muskoka and the Algonquin region.
What Does a Canoe Yoke Do?
Most canoes have a centre yoke installed at the balance point of the canoe for portaging. Some are flat with shaped edges, while others feature a dished contour for extra comfort during long carries. Traditional paddlers may also use a tumpline to help support and balance the load on rugged trails.
Over time, wooden yokes can wear down from moisture, UV exposure, rough handling, and years of use.
Inspect Your Yoke Every Season
At the end of each paddling season, it’s a good idea to inspect your canoe’s yoke and thwarts for signs of wear or rot, especially near the ends where the wood sits beneath the inwales.
The best way to inspect a yoke properly is to remove it from the canoe. If the wood is still solid, you can help protect it by applying a generous coat of wood oil before reinstalling it. Regular maintenance can greatly extend the life of your canoe’s wood components.
Signs your yoke may need replacement include:
Soft or spongy wood
Dark staining or rot near mounting points
Cracks or splitting
Loose mounting hardware
Excessive warping
Discomfort while portaging
Replacing a Canoe Yoke or Thwart
If your yoke has started to rot or crack, replacement is usually the safest and best long-term option. There are many different styles, wood species, and shapes available depending on the look, comfort, and durability you want for your canoe.
At Johnny’s Boat Shop, we can professionally install replacement yokes and thwarts to ensure a secure fit and proper balance point for your canoe.
For paddlers who enjoy doing their own repairs, replacement parts and hardware are also available. Most replacement yokes are supplied oversized and must be trimmed to fit your canoe properly.
And remember: “Measure twice, cut once.”
Cutting a new yoke too short can become an expensive mistake very quick.
