Trim Replacement & Gunwale Repair

There’s something timeless about a canoe with beautiful wooden trim. A well-maintained set of wood gunwales can completely change the look and feel of a canoe, giving it warmth, character, and that classic backcountry style many paddlers love.

But canoe trim isn’t just there to look good.

The trim on your canoe plays a major role in the structural integrity of the entire boat. In simple terms, your gunwales help hold everything together. Without them, the hull would lose much of its strength and rigidity.

At Johnny’s Boat Shop, we often remind paddlers that wood trim should be treated like any other important piece of outdoor equipment. It needs regular inspection and maintenance to stay safe and reliable.

As wooden gunwales age, moisture, sun exposure, repeated flexing, and years of use can slowly weaken the wood. One of the most common warning signs is a gap beginning to form between the inner and outer gunwale. Sometimes screws loosen over time or stop gripping properly because the wood underneath has softened or started to rot.

If you notice this happening, try gently tightening the screws about a quarter turn using a screwdriver, not a drill or screw gun. If the screws continue spinning without tightening, it’s a good sign the wood may no longer be holding properly.

Ignoring failing trim can eventually lead to much bigger problems.

We’ve seen older inwales break at the yoke during portages, causing injury to both paddler and canoe. We’ve also seen rotten trim fail around seat hangers, suddenly shifting a paddler’s weight and dropping one side of the seat into the hull. Needless to say, unexpected swims are rarely part of the trip plan.

That’s why regular maintenance matters.

At Johnny’s Boat Shop, our annual maintenance services help catch these issues before they become serious problems. We inspect the condition of the gunwales, seats, hardware, yokes, and attachment points while helping protect the wood from further deterioration.

If replacement is needed, we can repair or replace damaged trim and discuss the best options for your canoe, whether you want to maintain the original look or upgrade components for durability and performance.

As always, inspections and repair quotes are free. If your canoe’s trim is starting to show its age, bring it by the shop and we’ll take a look before a small problem becomes a trip-ending repair.
